Breast Program

UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center's Breast Program makes your breast health a top priority. Our team is committed to providing you with comprehensive breast care that incorporates a variety of services ranging from basic preventive care to advanced surgical procedures. Whether you need to obtain your annual mammogram screening or are in need of specialized treatment for a malignant or benign disease of the breast, we’ve got you covered.

To learn more about mammography at UNM SRMC – including our 3D breast imaging option – and how to schedule your annual visit, please view our Radiology & Women’s Imaging page.

If you require more advanced breast care, Dr. Stephanie Fine – our Board Certified surgeon specializing in Breast Surgical Oncology –offers outpatient clinics and surgical services for individuals affected by malignant diseases or benign conditions of the breast and those with a strong family history of breast and other types of cancers. For a malignant disease of the breast, Dr. Fine offers the following services:

  • Lumpectomy
  • Sentinel node procedures
  • Nipple- or skin-sparing mastectomy
  • Use of radiation catheters post-lumpectomy, which shortens the duration of radiation treatment and has improved cosmetic outcomes in appropriate patients
  • Second opinions about a malignant breast disease diagnosis
  • Consultation with plastic surgeons for both immediate and delayed reconstruction

For individuals with benign breast conditions – which include “lumps” felt by patients, abnormal mammogram readings, breast infections, gynecosmastia (overgrowth of breast tissue in men), congenital deformities, implant problems, enlarged axillary lymph nodes/lumps in armpit area and abnormal skin lesions in breast or nipple area – Dr. Fine offers evaluations, second opinions and a variety of treatment options.

Dr. Fine also provides evaluations for high-risk patients with a strong family history of breast and other types of cancers or known genetic mutations, offering genetic counseling and testing services through our certified genetic counselors and develops appropriate follow up or surgical strategies for high risk patients.
