Family Medicine Doctors

Paul Afek, MD

Paul Afek, MD

Paul Afek, MD is an Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and completed his Family Medicine residence at Forbes Family Medicine in Pennsylvania. He worked for 13 years at a rural Community Health Center near Tucson, Arizona as part of the National Health Service Corps, and was a volunteer clinical faculty member at the University of Arizona. He then worked for 5 years at a hospital-owned outpatient office prior to moving to Albuquerque. Dr. Afek is working primarily at UNM SRMC and is precepting residents at the Indian Health Service clinic on the main campus. Prior to his career in medicine, Dr. Afek was a tractor mechanic on a kibbutz in Israel, and a medic in the Israel Defense Force. He enjoys outdoor activities with his wife, and playing with his grandchildren, as well as fitness and amateur natural bodybuilding.

 

 

Celia Valdez, MD

Celia Valdez, MD

When Dr. Valdez isn't skiing or biking with her family, she is doing what she loves - taking care of patients. Dr. Valdez received her bachelor's and Medical School degrees from UNM, is Board Certified in Family Medicine and has lived and practiced on the Westside for 22 years. "Being a part of SRMC and serving my community members is a privilege and a blessing," said Dr. Valdez. "I am looking forward to helping improve the health of Westside residents, one patient at a time."

Kevin Henry, MD

Kevin Henry, MD

Dr. Henry is a graduate of UNM's School of Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine. "I want to continue to increase my knowledge base and work with the underserved population in Sandoval County," said Dr. Henry. "I enjoy working with all ages and backgrounds and I am excited to help promote health and wellness in New Mexico." During his free time, Dr. Henry goes out into the local landscape for hikes, bike rides and other outdoor activities where he can soak in the culture and all that New Mexico has to offer. "I appreciate the opportunity to work at a new facility that truly cares about its' patients, their families and their wellbeing."

Anthony Fleg, MD

Dr. Anthony Fleg is excited to join the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine, returning to the same place he received his own residency training. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at UNM, Dr. Fleg also works in the Outpatient Family Medicine Clinic at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, where he is eager to promote and strengthen the facility’s academic mission.

His appreciation for the sacred space that healers and patients share is the foundation for his desire to work as a healer, and he strives to serve patients with loving, empowering and dignified care. His clinical areas of interest include helping patients with chronic pain, integrative medicine and helping empower people to take greater steps toward healthy lifestyles.

Dr. Fleg is also very involved in community health efforts, mostly with Indigenous populations. He helps coordinate a love-funded partnership called the Native Health Initiative (NHI) and hopes to develop increased collaboration between NHI and UNM in the coming months and years. In his community work at UNM, he seeks to invest energy toward youth empowerment programs and supporting Indigenous youth interested in health careers.

Aaron Skiles, CFNP

Aaron Skiles, CFNP

Receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees from UNM, Aaron grew up in Sandoval County and it has always been his long term goal to become a nurse practitioner to provide for the medical needs of the residents of Sandoval County. Aaron has a special interest in treating patients with chronic Hepatitis C, using the exciting new medications that are available to cure this serious disease. He works in association with the University of New Mexico’s Project ECHO in both the Hepatitis C and HIV programs to provide the most current evidence-based therapies delivered at SRMC, which helps bring specialty care to patients in their home community. Aaron is also excited to offer patients PrEP for prevention of HIV infection.

"I am very committed to the physical and emotional wellbeing of the people of New Mexico and I see it as a privilege to have the opportunity to serve my patients by working at SRMC." He is Nationally Certified from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is proud to be a part of SRMC's mission to improve the health of the surrounding communities.

 

Medical Director

Shane Cass, DO Medical Director

In addition to serving the community as a Board Certified primary care physician at SRMC, Dr. Cass is a team physician for the UNM Lobos, specializing in non-operative, primary care sports medicine. He is married with three children and said, "Practicing at SRMC represents the best of the community and university models of healthcare." He is excited to work in both worlds and continued to say, "The university model represents the highest level of care, specialization and training of physicians while the community model represents the patient-centered and friendly side of healthcare."

Alison Marshall, CFNP

Alison Marshall, CFNP

Alison received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNM College of Nursing, and is nationally certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Prior to completing her training as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Alison worked in a variety of nursing settings, including the UNMH Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and home hospice/palliative care.

As a New Mexico native, Alison is passionate about serving her community and is honored to work at UNM SRMC. “I hope to address the physical and psychological needs of my patients holistically, using a variety of modalities that include non-pharmacological therapies,” said Alison. She enjoys seeing patients of all ages - including children - and looks forward to working with a diverse patient population.

Outside of work, you can find Alison hiking, running and swimming with her family and friends.

Senior Behavioral Health Doctors

Aaron Brodsky, MD

Aaron Brodsky, MD

Dr. Aaron Brodsky comes to UNM SRMC after serving as the Medical Director and attending geropsychiatrist at the UNM Psychiatric Center. Dr. Brodsky is a graduate of the University of Florida School of Medicine and a product of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine internship and residency programs in General Adult Psychiatry. In addition to receiving his Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry from the UNM School of Medicine in 2009, Dr. Brodsky also received Board Certification in Psychiatry & Neurology in 2011 and is working to obtain Board Certification in Geriatric Psychiatry this spring.

Dr. Brodsky is excited to expand his responsibilities, reach a growing community, and enhance the development of SRMC’s Senior Behavioral Health unit. “This new opportunity, combined with my continued involvement at the UNM School of Medicine, provides the best of both worlds,” said Dr. Brodsky. “I look forward to getting to know the SRMC community and continuing to grow the geriatric psychiatry specialty and the reach of those we serve.” Outside of work, Dr. Brodsky loves hiking in the Sandias with his fiancé and watching his 2 year old daughter grow. He also enjoys reading, watching movies, and playing the piano.

Cardiology Doctors

Harry Hai, MD

Harry Hai, MD

Dr. Hai is UNM SRMC’s lead Cardiologist and is proud to serve as the Director of the SRMC Heart Station. Dr. Hai went to medical school in India where he graduated with Honors at the top of his class. He subsequently came to the United States and had internship training at Philadelphia General Hospital and Internal Medicine residency at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Hai had Fellowship training in Cardiology at Harvard University and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was on the faculty of Northwestern University in Chicago for many years, and is presently a member of the faculty of University of New Mexico School of Medicine, in addition to his responsibilities at UNM SRMC.

Dr. Hai has dedicated his career to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and is proud to share his expertise with the residents of Sandoval County. He chose to practice at UNM SRMC because it offered the challenge of developing a complete Cardiology Service center that caters to the needs of communities within the area. “I love to see patients and find out the nature of their cardiology problems. I enjoy helping them resolve their problems and reassuring them that despite the heart problems they have, normal life and longevity is still possible in most cases with good medical care,” said Dr. Hai.

Outside of work, Dr. Hai has many hobbies. He enjoys oil painting, reading about philosophy and native customs, and photographing the many beautiful sights in New Mexico.

Orthopaedics Doctors

Carlston

Cory Carlston, MD

Dr. Carlston specializes in hand and wrist surgery for patients of all ages. This includes treatment of fractures, lacerations of tendons, nerves, and vessels and complex trauma such as finger replantation. He also takes care of common pathologies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. He has an interest in complex wound reconstruction of the upper extremity as well.

Dr. Carlston earned his medical degree from the University of Utah. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California and his hand surgery fellowship here at the University of New Mexico.

His research interests include surgical approaches for distal radius fractures, the anatomy and pathology of the first carpometacarpal joint and tendon lacerations. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Orr

Charlotte Orr, MD

Dr. Orr joined UNM School of Medicine faculty in August of 2014, and practices general orthopaedic surgery at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center. Her areas of interest include knee and shoulder arthroscopy, knee and hip joint replacement, extremity fractures and various hand procedures such as carpal tunnel release.

Dr. Orr earned her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and medical degree from the University of Kentucky - "Go Cats!" She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of New Mexico.

 Dr. Orr is a board-eligible member of the Amercian Academy of Orthopaedic Suregons and has applied for trauma fellowship targeted to start in 2016. She has also been a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society since 2008. Her publications include patient information articles on the topics of nonossifying fibromas, soft tissue chondromas and adamantinoma or osteofibrous dysplasia.

Modhia

Urvij Modhia, MBBS, MD

After completing his orthopaedic residency in 2006, Dr. Modhia remained in India to work as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics until 2010. He moved to the United States in 2011 to obtain further specialty training in spine surgery, orthopaedic trauma and pediatric orthopaedics. He completed his spine surgery fellowship at the University of California San Francisco in 2012, his orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of New Mexico in 2013 and his pediatric orthopedic fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in 2014.

Dr. Modhia is a member of the North American Spine Society, the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. In addition to serving as a faculty member at the UNM School of Medicine, Dr. Modhia also practices here at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, where he enjoys working with a “highly efficient and supportive staff” that focuses on providing excellent patient care.

In his free time, Dr. Modhia enjoys hiking, bicycling and spending quality time with his family. Dr. Modhia is an enthusiastic and compassionate provider who enjoys helping others – he is a great asset to our Team here at UNM SRMC!

Eric Lew, MD

Eric Lew, MD

Dr. Lew joined UNM Orthopaedics in early September after completing a Diabetic Limb Salvage and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) in Tucson. He is a graduate of Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Iowa, and he completed a reconstructive foot and ankle surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic – Kaiser Permanente in Ohio. Lew will partner with UNM Vascular Surgery, UNM Orthopaedics and Diabetic Comprehensive Care Specialists in creating UNM Center for Healing In the Lower Extremity (CHILE), which focuses on limb salvage, wound healing and preserving the ambulatory status in patients with diabetes.

As the newest member of the UNM SRMC Orthopaedic team, Dr. Lew brings the much-needed service of Podiatry to Sandoval County. "It's so great to be a part of UNM SRMC. I really enjoy seeing patients here," said Dr. Lew. In time, he hopes to expand his practice and be able to spend even more time at UNM SRMC.

Briggs

Dustin T. Briggs, MD

Dr. Briggs specializes in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis. His surgical spectrum of practice includes minimally invasive partial knee replacements (patellofemoral and unicompartmental arthroplasty), total hip and knee replacements, complex revisions of hip and knee replacements and periprosthetic fractures. In young patients who suffer from knee arthritis, Dr. Briggs also specializes in joint preservation, including osteotomies (bone and joint re-alignment) and cartilage restoration.

Dr. Briggs earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of New Mexico (“corn raised, chile blazed”). He completed fellowship in Lower Extremity Reconstruction at Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California.

His research interests include the use of osteochondral allograft transplant for cartilage injuries of the knee, mechanical alignment and soft tissue balancing strategies during total knee arthroplasty, the use of computer (navigation) and robotic assistance for knee and hip replacements and the theory of low-carbohydrate diets for weight loss. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Briggs enjoys getting to know patients on a personal level. He has an enthusiasm for patient care and puts patients at ease during the often-stressful treatment of joint pain. His finds joy in helping his patients return to their hobbies and have a more active lifestyle following joint replacement surgery.

Breast Program Doctors

Stephanie Fine, MD

Stephanie Fine, MD

As a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Dr. Stephanie Fine is happy to be back in the Land of Enchantment and is eager to serve the UNM SRMC community with her expertise in Breast Surgical Oncology. In addition to being a key player in the development of the new Breast Program at UNM SRMC, Dr. Fine also serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at her medical school alma mater – the UNM School of Medicine – and practices at the UNM Cancer Center in Albuquerque.

After earning her medical degree in 1989, Dr. Fine completed her Surgical Residency and Internship at the University of Utah Medical Center. After practicing for several years, she went on to obtain her Fellowship in Breast Surgery at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio. She is Board Certified in Surgery and is a member of several prestigious national organizations, including the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Omega Alpha, and was a former Board Member for Cancer Support Now, Inc.

Dr. Fine moved to Tesuque at the age of 7 and completed all of her schooling in Santa Fe. She has always considered New Mexico to be her "home", finding joy in the unique beauty of the state and all of the outdoor activities available. Whether she is mountain trail running, biking or engaging in some sort of snow sport, Dr. Fine is likely to be enjoying the great outdoors in her free time. She also enjoys reading historical books and the occasional fiction novel when she finds a spare moment, and can be found following the farmer’s market during the summer and fall.
