Spine Center

Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Program for Spinal Health at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, where we incorporate a comprehensive approach to achieving total spine health!

Guided by our team of rehabilitation medicine specialists, a full spectrum of diagnostic procedures are available and coupled, when necessary, with a range of minimally invasive procedures. Included in the list of procedures are the new, "truly" minimally invasive endoscopic procedures that were recently introduced to New Mexico with the opening of the Anthony T. & Eileen K. Yeung Center for Endoscopic Spine Surgery, located right here at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center. A Comprehensive Approach

With an initial focus on non-invasive approaches to improving spine mechanics, our team is focused on offering the best treatments available for addressing spine problems and back pain. To provide comprehensive, full spectrum spinal care, the Spine Program at UNM SRMC has a medical team that includes both Neurosurgeons and Physiatrists who work together to discuss the most appropriate treatment options for each and every patient. By working as a team, our providers ensure that each patient is provided with a unique and personalized treatment plan that encompasses the whole scope of back and spinal care. Our team includes:

  • Dr. W. Evan Rivers, D.O. – Physiatrist
  • Dr. Peter Shin, MD, MS, MBA – Neurosurgery
  • Jessica Roscosky PA-C – Neurosurgery

While our Neurosurgeons focus on surgical interventions, our Physiatrists specialize in physical medicine, rehabilitation and non-narcotic pain medicine. They are spine specialists who focus on the body’s musculoskeletal system – which includes bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves – and take a non-surgical approach (e.g. rehabilitative exercises, spinal injections and joint and nerve blocks) to treating musculoskeletal disease and injury. Our Physiatrists often work in conjunction with Physical Therapists, nurses and other medical professionals to help manage pain, improve function and provide a comprehensive approach to care.

When surgical treatment is necessary, our Neurosurgeons are here to provide cutting-edge procedures. Among these procedures is the endoscopically guided laser spine technique, which uses surgery tools that are 1/6th the size of surgical tubes used in regular minimally invasive back surgery and up to 1/20th the size of what might be used in a conventional back operation. With only a few tiny incisions and the use of such small surgical tubes, the recovery time is much shorter and the scarring is very minimal.

Conditions We Treat

Our team is here to treat patients with diverse problems that range from simple low back sprains to complex disorders, such as spinal cord injury. The diagnoses we provide treatment for include:

  • Radiculopathy
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Spondylosis
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
